DD-WRT Router - OpenVPN

Some of these routers have low powered processors, so speed may be slower than when using the VPN directly on a computer/tablet/etc.

You must have a Residential VPN account to use this service.

Install Guide

Step 1
Retrieve your VPN username, VPN password and OpenVPN Configuration Files from the 'My Services' section of the Client Area:

Please note, the below is a screenshot of the Client Area. Use the link above, to access the Client Area.

Step 2
Locate the OpenVPN Configuration Files you downloaded in Step 1, in your Downloads folder, extract/decompress the zip file.

A new 'BT-xxx' folder will be created, which contains the OpenVPN Configuration Files.

Step 3
Connect a cable from your main broadband router, to the 'Internet' (or WAN) port on your DD-WRT router.

Typically the 'Internet' port has a globe icon on the back, or is labelled WAN.

Then, power on the router.

Step 4
Login to the router, by connecting your computer to the DD-WRT router wifi network (or cabled port).

The default wifi key and password can either be found on the bottom of the unit, or with the included paperwork/documentation.

Step 5
Go to Services → VPN

Step 6
Under the heading 'OpenVPN Server / Client'

Step 7
Enable OpenVPN Client

Step 8
Click Save at the bottom of the screen

Step 9
Locate 'Import Configuration', towards the bottom of the OpenVPN Client section

Step 10
Click 'Choose File'

Step 11
Upload one of the ovpn files, from Zip file containing your configuration files downloaded in Step 1

Which options should I use?!

  • Port 1, 2, 3 are labelled 'Performance', these are typically the fastest
  • Port 4, 5, 6 are labelled 'Fallback', these may be required from some restricted locations
  • We recommend you experiment, to see which works best for you.

Step 12
Set 'Encryption Cipher' to either 'AES-256-GCM' OR 'AES-128-GCM'

  • AES-128-GCM may use less CPU on your router, i.e be faster
  • AES-256-GCM is a higher encryption level.

Step 13
Set 'First Data Cipher' to the SAME as 'Encryption Cipher', i.e either 'AES-256-GCM' OR 'AES-128-GCM'

Step 14
Set 'Second Data Cipher' AND 'Third Data Cipher' to 'Not Set'

Step 15
Make sure 'User Pass Authentication' is Enabled

Step 16
Enter your VPN username and Password, retrieved in 'Step 1'

Step 17
Click Save, at the bottom

Step 18
Click Apply Settings, at the bottom

Step 19
